Night Out for Safety and Liberation is an annual event on the first Tuesday of August where we redefine and re-imagine what public safety means for our communities.

We know all too well that people in power have co-opted “safety” to criminalize, brutalize, and incarcerate low-income communities and communities of color. The current public safety strategy is criminalize and incarcerate first, and the result is communities that are less safe, equitable, and healthy. 

Created by the Ella Baker Center, the goal is to change the conversation about public safety to be less focused on fear, punishment, and criminalization and more focused on how we can build equity and power by investing in our communities.

NOSL events encourage neighbors to get to know each other and remind us that people have more than “eyes and ears” to watch their neighbors; they have hands and hearts to help their neighbors as well.
