Introducing Donna Red Wing
Grassroots Leadership’s new Executive Director

Social justice has been a defining thread throughout Donna Red Wing’s work. Whether working with abused children or working towards equity for LGBT persons or defending religious liberty, Donna is at her core, an activist and an organizer. Before joining Grassroots Leadership, she was Chief of Staff of the Interfaith Alliance where she helped designed the First Freedom First campaign and the Green Paper Project on LGBT equality and religious freedom.

Grassroots Leadership continues to show America the impact and the joy of organizing. I am extraordinarily proud to be the next Executive Director of this amazing organization. I look forward to working with the staff and the Board of Directors as together we take Grassroots Leadership into a new decade of learning and teaching, and understanding the astonishing power of people who care and who organize. – Donna Red Wing

Grassroots Leadership announces two new initiatives

Revoke 287(g)

The 287(g) program allows local law enforcement agencies to contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to act as ICE agents. The 287(g) program works counter to community policing goals by eroding the trust and cooperation of immigrant communities and diverted already scarce law enforcement resources. more>>

Close "Tent City" Detention Center in Raymondville, Texas

While called the "Willacy County Processing Center", it is the nation's largest immigrant detention center, holding more than 3,000 immigrant detainees. The facility is a private prison operated by Utah-based Management and Training Corporation (MTC). The facility has been dubbed "Tent City" because most of the "buildings" are Kevlar tents, more>>

Who we are...

Grassroots Leadership is a national Southern-based multiracial team of organizers who work to help community labor, campus and faith organizations think critically, work strategically and take direct action to end social and economic oppression, gain power, and achieve justice and equity.

Grassroots Leadership's goal is to strengthen democracy and enhance the public good by working to transform the justice system. We advocate for a community-based justice system and alternatives to incarceration, work to end the unnecessary practices of immigrant and family detention, abolish all for-profit private prisons, jails and detention centers and organize with those most impacted by incarceration and detention.
